In response to increasing instances of negative electricity prices in France, EDF and Iberdrola have agreed to reduce output from their offshore wind farms during such periods. This measure aims to alleviate grid imbalances caused by oversupply from renewable sources during times of low demand. Negative pricing, which has become more frequent, particularly around midday in summer, signals the need for enhanced grid flexibility and storage solutions. Grid operator RTE and industry stakeholders emphasize that while curtailment helps maintain system stability, it also highlights challenges in integrating growing renewable capacities without sufficient demand-side management or storage infrastructure.
