Thailand Wind Energy Market Information Sharing

Date:2025-04-11

Thailand has been actively advancing its wind energy sector as part of a broader commitment to renewable energy expansion and carbon neutrality goals. As of 2023, the country had an installed wind power capacity of approximately 1,476 megawatts (MW) across 34 projects, according to the Thai Wind Energy Association (ThaiWEA).

Growth and Projections: Between 2010 and 2023, Thailand's onshore wind power capacity experienced a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 54%. Looking ahead, forecasts suggest a more moderate CAGR of 5% from 2023 to 2035, with wind energy projected to constitute about 3% of the nation's total installed generation capacity by 2035.

Policy Initiatives and Incentives: In 2024, Thailand introduced significant policy updates to stimulate renewable energy investments. Notably, the government facilitated direct power purchase agreements (PPAs), allowing private companies to procure up to 2,000 MW of electricity directly from renewable energy producers via grid connections operated by electricity authorities. This initiative aligns with Thailand's ambition to achieve 51% renewable electricity generation by 2037.
